iOS needs a cross-device file picker

Posted on: June 9, 2010

iMovie is coming out for the iPhone soon. Even though the iPhone’s resolution has been quadrupled, the physical screen size is still beyond tiny. You just can’t fit enough fingers in 3.5″. The natural app to follow is be iMovie for iPad. With its real estate, the iPad is ideal for this. But the iPad has no camera, and even if it did, you don’t want to hold that giant thing up in the air during filming. The solution is a cross-device file picker.

Just as the iPhone OS has a photo picker today that grabs from the local photo/video library, the cross-device file picker would look for nearby devices on bluetooth, then present a list of photos or video you can grab and edit. It’s the love child between today’s photo picker and Game Kit’s local bluetooth discovery. Take pictures and shoot video on your iPhone, then bring out the big guns for some heavy editing.
