Partially Thunderbird, partially Xcode
It looks like Activity Monitor crashing on launch was due to installing Xcode 3.1.1 last night, which for some reason removes GraphKit from the PrivateFrameworks folder. The mds overdrive looks like it was caused by Thunderbird’s Webmail extension just spewing out tons and tons of log files for Spotlight to index.

I don’t like Thunderbird
I got Thunderbird today to use the webmail extension and back up old emails from my Yahoo account. It worked, sort of. Then I took a nap. When I woke up a couple hours later, 62 log files were spewed all over my desktop, bash and mds were taking up 100% of my CPU, Thunderbird was completely unresponsive, and Activity Monitor would crash upon launch. This furthers my resolve never to switch to Firefox.

Credit default swap = banksex
I’m listening to NPR’s new episode of “This American Life” about the economy. It’s teaching me that credit default swaps are like banksex. When you buy and sell insurance this way, you’re buying and selling with every risky institution that bank has dealt with. When you have sex with someone, you’re having sex with everyone they’ve ever had sex with.

Neighborly observations
I leave for work Monday through Friday at 6:15 am, give or take 5 minutes. Someone in the house across the street from me gets home in their truck every day at 6:15 am, leaves their truck in the driveway, and goes in through the garage. They do this Monday through Friday at least; I’m not sure about the weekends since I sleep in. Their schedule is accurate down to the minute. Since my room overlooks our driveways, I can hear them pulling in at 6:15 if I’m a few minutes late, or pass by them on the street if I’m a few minutes early.
A few nights ago I was up all night, and I think I heard them leaving around 4 am. I wonder what they’re doing every morning. I’m pretty it’s not someone working a night shift, because the truck is always gone when I get home from work. Maybe it’s the dad going out for some morning exercise?
